Christianity Essentials : LORDSHIP

There were times in my life that I said the word lord or call on GOD using the name LORD but not until I truly became a Christian that I realized what it really meant and how it mattered so much.

Being born in a democratic country, it is hard to grasp kingship or lordship until we rally understand its concept. But for us to really understand LORDSHIP and apply in our daily lives, let us first look into what the word "lord" really means.

Let us ask ourselves this simple question to help us get started. Please be honest.

Who makes the decision in our life? In our family?

Whoever our answer to this question is the one is the lord of our life.

A lord is simply someone who has authority over someone or a group of people. Whoever is the authority calls the shots and makes the decision. Whoever makes the decision in our lives is the lord of our lives. If we buy our perfume based on what our favorite celebrity tells us to buy then sad to say, that celebrity is the lord of our life for that aspect. If we do something in the morning based on what our spouse has told us then he/she is the lord of our life for that moment.

Ultimately, if we make our decision based on what other things, people or the world tells us then that thing, person or even the world is our LORD.

The other side of the coin however is that being a lord to someone means that lord should provide everything... literally everything. Protection, provision, health, education, work, clothes, house, car, money, schools, hospitals, tables, chairs, paper, pen and EVERY THING you can think of. It is the lord job to provide for "his" people like a part of his own family, his own flesh.

Now the next question is, how did JESUS became our savior and lord?

Before we welcome and accepted JESUS in our lives, Satan has been effortlessly owning us. We never knew what GOD's plan for us thus we continue to the path of our own understanding. We never resisted satan's temptation and enticement. Sometimes he doesn't even need to tempt us, we do wicked things and thoughts by ourselves and find more and worse ways of doing wickedness and self gratification of our earthly desires. In short, we are enemies of GOD and satan owns us.

Romans 1:24

Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.

2 Peter 2:19

They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for “people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.”

Colossians 1:21
Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior.

But now that we accepted GOD's gift of salvation, we now enjoy the righteousness HE has given us. We no longer base our decisions on our earthly desires but rather what GOD intended us to do. We now turn away from the wickedness we enjoyed before and embrace GOD's plan and lordship.

When JESUS died on the cross, HE redeemed us from our slavery from our own sins and satan's temptation and enticement. The price is paid and we now are not slave to our own worldly desires but slave to GOD's righteousness.

Since GOD paid for us, HE now owns us and now our lord.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

Now that JESUS is the LORD of our lives, we now follow what HE tells us and align ourselves with HIS will. We now walk in the path of righteousness and be like HIM. This means that every decision we will be making should serve HIS purpose and HIS glory. Everything we own doesn't really belong to us, HE owns it and we are just stewards.

So even the tiniest decision like buying something from somewhere, we should ask the following questions first.
  • Does doing this conflict with the will/word of GOD?
  • Will this bring glory to HIS name?
This may sound harsh but that's just the way it is. It either the LORD of all, or not at all.

Heavy... right? Don't worry, it gets better.

The part I'm very excited about is that HE being the LORD of my life. Let me repeat that again... GOD himself, the omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent GOD is the LORD of our life. He will provide us with moral, financial, emotional, intellectual, relational.... everything! Nothing is impossible for HIM! Every morning I will wake up in confidence that there is nothing that GOD cannot give me. Anything I ask, HE can give. That is a thought we will want to wake up on for the rest of our lives. What can be more exciting than that?!

Luke 11:13
If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Luke 1:37
For nothing is impossible with God.

But let just remember, lordship means obedience and total surrender. And surrender is always a heart issue. Submission always come from the heart. When we accept in our heart that JESUS is our LORD and savior, then we follow HIM 100%, no buts, no maybes, no lukewarm submission.

Romans 10:9-10
If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

Luke 6:46
Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?

Revelations 3:15-16
I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

Come to think about it, accepting JESUS' lordship is for our own good and benefit. So what's not to like? It may not be a walk in the park but rest assured that JESUS himself will help us through. JESUS got it for us so we have nothing to worry about. We'll isn't that the best reason to celebrate?

Colossians 2:6-7
So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

Philippians 1:6
...being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
